Filipinos in the 2011 World Billionaires List
- Details
- Category: Money and Finance
We can't help but being amazed with the individuals in the 2011 World Billionaires list of Forbes magazine. We could start with the youngest (Dustin Moskovitz, age 26, United States, with a net worth of US$2.7 Billion) or the perennial toss-up between the top 3 billionaires (Carlos Slim Helu [US$74 Billion, Mexico], Bill Gates [US$56 Billion, United States] and Warren Buffett [US$50 Billion, United States]). But let's focus on the Filipinos who are in the billionaires list.
There were 2 from the Philippines in 2008, Henry Sy and Lucio Tan. This time, there are four (net worth calculated March 2011):
1. Henry Sy (US$5.8 Billion, Overall Rank 173)
2. Lucio Tan (US$2.3 Billion, Rank 512)
3. Andrew Tan (US$2.2 Billion, Rank 540)
4. Enrique Razon (US$1.1 Billion, Rank 1057)

Mr. Sy is known for SM and Banco de Oro, while Mr. Lucio Tan for Eton Properties, Fortune Tobacco, Asia Brewery and Philippine Airlines. Both of them, as well as Mr. Andrew Tan, are graduates of Far Eastern University. This would probably be of great encouragement to those who are not from the more expensive exclusive schools in the Philippines.
More importantly, their fortunes are self-made, which goes to show that a successful Pinoy Entrepreneur need not born with a golden spoon. Who knows you'll be in that list down the road? You'll never know unless you try. Now, go out and make your first billion.
