Poll: Effect of More Holidays on the Economy
Polls
Thursday, 09 April 2009

Just a while ago, the Executive Secretary issued Proclamation No. 1752, declaring April 11, 2009 a special non-working holiday. This is obviously not one of the original holidays for 2009 (see list here) declared through Proclamation No. 1699. The reactions to this declaration of special non-working holiday, as well as the previous ones, are varied.

Business Support: A Discussion with Milllette Carlos of MyOffice
Pinoy Entrepreneurs
Friday, 20 February 2009

When MyOffice was listed at the Directory, I noticed the name Milette Carlos. I remembered reading about Millette in a 2007 issue of a magazine, about mothers who run their business while running their homes smoothly at the same time. The article reveals that Milette Carlos started MyOffice in 2004 with her sister. So within hours after the MyOffice entry appeared in the Directory, we got in touch with Milette and asked her if she's amenable to a discussion, just like the previous discussion with Pinoy Entrepreneurs. Milette, who is the Managing Director of MyOffice, graciously agreed.

Sharing your Credit Information through the System
Money and Finance
Thursday, 19 February 2009

Late last year, a new law was passed creating a centralized credit information system, intended to address the need for reliable information concerning the credit standing and track record of borrowers. There are some reservations and criticisms raised against this move, principally surrounding the issue on privacy of each borrower's credit information. This is Republic Act No. 9510, also known as the "Credit Information System Act" (full text here).

Poll: Confidence in Pre-Need Plans and Pre-Need Companies
Polls
Friday, 06 February 2009

My wife asked if it's time to withdraw from our pre-need plan as a result of the recent barrage of news about the problems faced by pre-need companies. This is not the first time that pre-need companies are in the hot seat. Years back, the College Assurance Plan (CAP) and Pacific Plans, Inc. (PPI) suffered a financial problem which prompted them to seek shelter under the rules on corporate rehabilitation. Lately, member-companies of the Legacy Group (Legacy Consolidated Plans, Scholarship Plan Philippines, All Asia Plans) closed shop. First, let's define some concepts.

Characterizing Entrepreneurship: Who are Pinoy Entrepreneurs?
Entrepreneurship
Monday, 26 January 2009

There are problems with this title. First, it might be interpreted to refer to a particular person. While we have a category on (and some lists of) successful and inspiring Pinoy Entrepreneurs, the thrust of this article is not to identify any particular Pinoy Entrepreneur, but to characterize an entrepreneur. Having a characterization would make it much easier to identify specific Pinoy Entrepreneurs. This may be of particular interest considering that an overwhelming majority are not cowed with the current recession in other countries and would still try business in 2009.

Poll: Business as Usual in 2009?
Polls
Tuesday, 06 January 2009

Two successive polls at the Front Page is unusual. It hasn't been done before. But we're doing it now because this isn't an ordinary time in business and in the financial lives of everyone. We all know that there's a financial crisis affecting the world, the Philippines not excluded. It arguably started in the United States, which is now in a recession. We can't say, not yet anyway, that there's a global recession, but we can say that there's a global financial problem.

Poll: Should January 2, 2009 be declared a holiday?
Polls
Friday, 19 December 2008

Update (24 December): Well, look at that, Malacanang today issued Proclamation 1695, declaring January 2, 2009 an additional special non-working holiday. You may still want to see the results (below) of our poll, which shows that an overwhelming majority favors January 2 to be declared as a holiday.
