Poll for Pinoys

Poll: Business as Usual in 2009? Print E-mail
Written by Pinoy Entrepreneur, on 05-01-2009

Two successive polls at the Front Page is unusual. It hasn't been done before. But we're doing it now because this isn't an ordinary time in business and in the financial lives of everyone. We all know that there's a financial crisis affecting the world, the Philippines not excluded. It arguably started in the United States, which is now in a recession. We can't say, not yet anyway, that there's a global recession, but we can say that there's a global financial problem.

Banks and financial institutions are becoming more strict in lending money. Worse, many banks and financial institutions closed down or were bailed out. Capital for businesses, both start-ups and established, is not readily available like before. Companies are closing. Layoffs are inevitable. We're not trying to scare anyone. We're only laying the basis for our poll --

Will you, Pinoy Entrepreneur, still proceed to start or continue doing business in 2009?

You may have no prior business endeavor and would want to see if you have what it takes to be a Pinoy Entrepreneur. You may already have an up and running business and you'd want to make it suceed. In whichever category you belong (although it's more interesting to ask those who are just planning to start out), will you still pursue business despite the economic malaise? Will it be business as usual for you?

Sure, we've talked about entrepreneurs seeing opportunities even in troubled times and about business opportunities in a recession, but writing/reading about it is entirely different from actually getting one's hands dirty, so to speak. It's a different matter to think about funding checks for suppliers and payroll for employees, while at the same time thinking of how to market one's products or services. Entrepreneurship is not for the fainthearted. But the rewards could be enormous.

Update: The poll ran from 26 December 2008 to 26 January 2009. Out of the 100 votes, 95% (95 votes) said they would still try business in 2009, 3% (3 votes) said they are not going to try business in 2009, while 2% (2 votes) said they don't care.
