Some time ago, my father handed me a book, Who Moved My Cheese, by Dr. Spencer Johnson (Vermilion [1998], 95 pages). It’s a short one; I finished it in just under an hour. The theme is about anticipating, accepting and enjoying change in work and in life. It’s about having the guts to step out of our comfort zones.
The story is in the form of a parable, involving two rats, two "Littlepeople," a cheese and a maze.
The cheese is used to represent what we want to have in life -- for Pinoy Entrepreneurs, it could be a business venture or financial stability. The maze represents the enviroment where we seek what we want. It could be the corporation or organization where we work for, our family or community.
The rats and the Littlepeople, on the other hand, represent different types of personalities of human beings. Others are afraid of change, choosing to stay within their comfort zones even with the knowledge that no growth is forthcoming, or, worse, that the cheese they have is vanishing. Others recognize, and anticipate, that the cheese will always be moved. It's no longer a question of "who moved my cheese?", but one of "how will I react when, not if, my cheese is moved?". By accepting change and going out of one's comfort zone, one gets to discover new opportunities, new cheese. The only constant in this world is change, something which Pinoy Entrepreneurs already know.
