February 25 (EDSA People Power Anniversary) is a non-working holiday (updated) |

Someboday asked if 25 February 2008, a Monday, is a special non-working holiday in the Philippines. We'd like to point out that February 25, or the EDSA People Power (some say, EDSA Revolution) anniversary, is not a regular national holiday listed in Republic Act 9492 (an Act rationalizing the celebration of national holidays). It's not one of the holidays in the list of National Regular and Special Holidays for 2008 in the Philippines. While it had been declared as a non-working holiday in previous years, it's still entirely discretionary on the part of the President. Come to think of it, your vacation and the long weekends are dependent not on the weather, but on the winds of politics.
As previously reported, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita mentioned that February 25 this year (2008) is a WORKING holiday. On 18 November 2008, however, Malacanang issued Proclamation 1462 (full text), declaring 25 February 2008 as a non-working holiday. Proclamation 1462 noted that it's "fitting that the entire Filipino nation be given the opportunity to observe this milestone in our country’s history," as the Power Revolution "restored and ushered political, social and economic reforms in the country, serves as an inspiration to Filipinos everywhere as we continue to chart our collective course as a nation and as a people." The list of holidays for the rest of 2008 is in another post -- National Regular and Special Holidays for 2008 in the Philippines.
