There's a strong link between entrepreneurship and franchising, as previously noted. Franchising, after all, is an entrepreneurial alliance between two organizations, the franchisor and the franchisee. And based on the modest experience we have in assisting franchise negotiations, we can say that franchising is indeed a very effective and successful business concept.

The Philippines is expected to become an Asian hub for franchising, the Inquirer news quoted the Philippine Franchise Association (PFA). According to PFA Chairman Emeritus, Samie Lim: “Many of these local franchises have been so successful and perhaps very competitive that they have displaced a not-so-insignificant number of foreign franchise concepts.” You will note that this statement puts the motto of this site in perspective: “In a global economy dominated by entrenched giants, the Pinoy Entrepreneurs can still make it big.”

The Philippine Franchise Association, as stated in its website, is a non-stock, non-profit organization which was formed in February 1995 to organize the growing number of franchise industry players, both homegrown and foreign. PFA is the pioneer franchise organization in the Philippines and, though relatively young, it has accomplished several milestones, having been recognized by the World Franchise Council, the International Franchise Association, and the Asia Pacific Franchise Confederation. It also opened windows for Franchise Financing Facilities for local Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in cooperation with the Small Business Guarantee Finance Cooperation, Export Industry Bank and Development Bank of the Philippines.

The Philippine Franchise Association, jointly with Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), and the Philippine Retailers Association (PRA), hands out the Franchise Excellence Awards (FEA). The 2006 awardees are:
2006 FEA Winners
 Pancake House
Outstanding Filipino Franchise of the Year (Hall of Fame)
Julie's Bakeshop Outstanding Filipino Franchise of the Year (Hall of Fame)
Seaoil Philippines Outstanding Filipino Franchise of the Year
Reyes Hair Int'l. Corp. Outstanding Filipino Franchise of the Year
Philippine Seven Corp. International Master Franchise
Waffle Time Most Promising Filipino Franchise of the Year
 Franchisee of the Year Category
 Max’s Restaurant Ma. Theresa Laus
 Julie’ Bakeshop Carolyn Sy-Francisco
Also, the Philippine Franchise Association published a handbook on franchising - A Guide to Franchising in the Philippines. According to the PFA, it aims to achieve three things with this publication: (1) To explain franchising in the context of the Filipino experience; (2) Share the Filipino franchise experience by telling remarkable stories of individuals who boldly took on the franchising challenge and succeeded; and (3) Provide the prospective end-users -- franchisors, franchisees and business people -- with essential information on franchising. To those who are thinking of venturing into the franchising world, perhaps this handbook will be of great help in knowing more about this business model.
