Ponzi Scam: The Menil Case
Scams and Schemes
Monday, 14 January 2008
We have a number of discussions on the Ponzi and pyramiding scams in this blog (see "Scams and Schemes"). There's a discussion of an actual case, the Panata Foundation case. The 2000 case of People vs. Menil, Jr. (G.R. No. 115054-66) involves a strikingly similar scheme. It's really amazing how this scam still works despite almost a hundred years of existence. Maybe people have this nagging doubt that such get-rich scheme is highly suspicious, but rational thinking is oftentimes clouded by the very same reason -- the prospect of getting rich quickly.

Poll: more Entrepreneurs or more Opportunities?
Polls
Saturday, 12 January 2008
The relatively recent push to encourage entrepreneurs and the entrepreneurial movement in the  Philippines should be strengthened further. Some say, however, that there are enough Filipino  entrepreneurs, except that there are no sufficient opportunities to go about. On the other hand, some may say that the reason why the Philippines is not as progressive as it should be is that there's only a handful of entrepreneurs -- not simply the middle class, because the middle class are not necessarily entrepreneurs. Many in the middle class are employees, who are not necessarily entrepreneurs. Many in the middle class and upper class are businessmen, but businessmen are not necessarily entrepreneurs.

National Regular and Special Holidays for 2008 in the Philippines
HR, Labor and Office
Friday, 11 January 2008

It seems many are planning their 2008 vacations way ahead of schedule. This early (this article was originally posted in November 2007), there are hits to this site searching for 2008 national holidays (see also 2008 holidays; 2009 holidays)  in the Philippines. Providing a fixed list of holiday dates is difficult because most of the 2008 regular holidays and nationwide special holidays are movable, as provided under Republic Act 9492 (an Act rationalizing the celebration of national holidays). For these movable holidays, the President is tasked by law to issue a Proclamation, at least 6 months prior to a movable holiday, fixing the specific date of that non-working day (if you're looking for the guidelines on the computation of holiday pay or premium, go here). Here's the list of Philippine holidays under RA 9492, unless the Proclamation is indicated:

Ark Avilon Zoo, Fun Ranch and Tiendesitas
Visit Philippines
Thursday, 10 January 2008
My wife read somewhere that there’s a “cool” zoo just beside Tiendesitas. A zoo beside Tiendesitas is a bit strange because aside from the fact that Tiendesitas is a place to shop and eat, it’s beside a mall (SM). Also, I regularly pass through the Malabon City zoo, just behind Potrero elemementary school along McArthur Highway (that’s a few meters from Monumento, Caloocan), but I never had the desire to go in a zoo, and I’m not really sure if it’s proper to qualify a “zoo” with being cool. The Ark Avilon Zoo made me rethink that. More photos, with the rest of the article, at the Visit Pinas blog.

Entrepreneur vs. Employee: Why can't everyone become entrepreneurs?
Entrepreneurship
Sunday, 06 January 2008
The entrepreneurial movement gained steam, I'd say, only in the past 3 or so years (or maybe I was too busy with other things that I didn't notice it). These days, you hear about entrepreneur groups and entrepreneur movements. There's a school for entrepreneurs and an entrepreneur caravan. In other words, there's an awakened movement towards entrepreneurship.

December 24 is a Special Non-Working Holiday
HR, Labor and Office
Tuesday, 18 December 2007
Somebody said that she just learned about December 24 being a holiday, which is quite surprising because we already noted this, as early as October of this year, in the post Public Holidays for October, November and December (2007) in the Philippines.

Establishing a Lending Company
Business Opportunities
Monday, 10 December 2007

We have a previous discussion on the regulation of the business of lending (Part 1 and Part 2 ). On 22 May 2007, Republic Act No. 9474, also known as the “Lending Company Regulation Act of 2007,” was approved. The rationale is to regulate the establishment of lending companies and to place their operation on a sound, efficient and stable condition to derive the optimum advantages from them as an additional source of credit. The following discussion may be of help to those asking how to start a lending business (reprinted at the e-Legal Forum).
