Banker to the Poor: Micro-Lending and the Battle Against World Poverty
Books
Monday, 25 February 2008
One of the best ways to development is to encourage the social-objective-driven entrepreneur, or "social entrepreneur," who "competes in the marketplace with all other competitors but is inspired by a set of social objectives." This is only one of the interesting points of Prof. Muhammad Yunus in his book Banker to the Poor: Micro-Lending and the Battle Against World Poverty" (PublicAffairs, 1999, 2003). You may have heard of Prof. Yunus, the founder of Grameen Bank (literally means "Rural" Bank). Both Prof. Yunus and Grameen Bank are joint winners of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Mortgage of conjugal properties: Consent of both spouses required
Contracts
Sunday, 24 February 2008
In a transaction involving a property owned by married persons, the consent of both spouses is generally required. For instance, if a married Pinoy Entrepreneur signs a real estate mortgage to guarantee a loan application to be used as business capital, the signature of his/her wife/husband is required by the bank or other lending institutions. Why?

John L. Gokongwei, Jr. - The Path of Entrepreneurship
Books
Friday, 22 February 2008
One way of inspiring and encouraging more Pinoy Entrepreneurs to swim in the sea of entrepreneurship is to write about those who've made it. This the observation of Marites A. Khanser, the author of the book "John L. Gokongwei, Jr.: The Path of Entrepreneurship" (Loyola Schools, Ateneo de Manila University, 2007). She noted, however, that "very few business success books of the taipans in the Philippines have been written seemingly because of their reluctance to tell their stories or go to the public with the secrets of their business success."

February 25 (EDSA People Power Anniversary) is a non-working holiday (updated)
HR, Labor and Office
Sunday, 17 February 2008
Someboday asked if 25 February 2008, a Monday, is a special non-working holiday in the Philippines. We'd like to point out that February 25, or the EDSA People Power (some say, EDSA Revolution) anniversary, is not a regular national holiday listed in Republic Act 9492 (an Act rationalizing the celebration of national holidays). It's not one of the holidays in the list of National Regular and Special Holidays for 2008 in the Philippines. While it had been declared as a non-working holiday in previous years, it's still entirely discretionary on the part of the President. Come to think of it, your vacation and the long weekends are dependent not on the weather, but on the winds of politics.

Poll: Most problematic factors in doing business in the Philippines
Business Opportunities
Saturday, 16 February 2008
A survey conducted by the World Economic Forum, released through its Global Competitiveness Report for 2007-2008, identified corruption as the most problematic factor in doing business in the Philippines. The next six (6) of the most problematic factors, including policy instability and inefficient government bureaucracy, are also attributable to the government. These past days, we are confronted with the testimony of Rodolfo Noel "Jun" Lozada, Jr. at the Senate, regarding the alleged corruption in the aborted $329-million national broadband network (NBN) deal with China’s ZTE Corp. Some say this is a bit unfair, as the government is taking steps to improve the Philippine business environment.

History of the Pandacan Oil Terminals
Corporate
Thursday, 14 February 2008
The good thing about court decisions is the accompanying discussion on the history of a particular subject matter. We noted, for instance, the history of trademarks. This time around, and assuming anyone is interested, here’s the history of the Pandacan oil terminals. The Supreme Court recently affirmed Manila City Ordinance No. 8027, reclassifying the area from industrial to commercial, and directing affected businesses -- including the so-called “Pandacan Terminals” of the oil companies -- to cease from operating in that location. This is an illustration of how a zoning ordinance could adversely affect existing business infrastructure.

Are Filipinos Ready to Become Entrepreneurs?
Entrepreneurship
Friday, 08 February 2008
In the article about the “entrepreneurial myth,” we noted Michael E. Gerber’s assertion that the e-myth is the “myth that most people who start small business are entrepreneurs” or “the fatal assumption that an individual who understands the technical work of a business can successfully run a business that does that technical work.”
