If you feel that you're worse off this year, don't be hard on yourself -- you're not alone. More Filipinos feel that they are worse off now than last year, and, worse (pun intended), a higher percentage thinks most Filipinos are “losers” now compared to a year ago. This is part of the study result of Pulse Asia's October 2008 Nationwide Survey on Quality of Life (QOL), Comparative State of the National Economy, and American Financial Crisis. The face-to-face field interviews for the project were conducted from 14 to 27 October 2008. |

The usual focus is the personal traits that make up an entrepreneur. We usually look at the person when the write about a Pinoy Entrepreneur, or any entrepreneur for that matter. This is not the entire story, as discussed in the new thought-provoking book of Malcolm Gladwell, the Outliers: The Story of Success (Little, Brown and Company [2008], 309 pages).

Pinoy Entrepreneurs must deal not only with how to generate money from their businesses or ventures, but they must also be aware of the benefits to which their employees are entitled to. This may not be a problem for many Pinoy Entrepreneurs who are just starting up and doing the work themselves. The hiring of workers may come later on. |

On 17 November 2008, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo issued Executive Order 758, providing for a Special Visa for Employment Generation (SVEG). A couple of months ago, we received an invitation from Ms. Deirdre de Padua of the UP Junior Marketing Association (UP JMA) to a bazaar (called, " BUY PINOY: A Charity Bazaar for Filipinos") scheduled last September. We understand that the even was a success. Ms. de Padua graciously provided us with the following tips on how to hold a successful bazaar. Hopefully these tips would be of help to Pinoy Entrepreneurs. (first of two parts; read Part II here). |

Among the items high on my hate-list every December is the really heavy traffic in Metro Manila. If you hate Metro traffic on a regular day, try going to Makati in the evenings during the weeks before December 25. For some strange reasons, everybody seems to be out on the streets. Maybe everybody is out shopping for Christmas gifts or for the noche buena, although it's interesting to find out if this still holds true even with the current economic downturn. |

Maybe you're planning your 2009 vacations this early. Most of the 2009 regular holidays and nationwide special holidays are movable, as provided under Republic Act 9492. For these movable holidays, the President is tasked by law to issue a Proclamation, at least 6 months prior to a movable holiday, fixing the specific date of that non-working day (if you're looking for the guidelines on the computation of holiday pay or premium, go here). The Philippine holidays listed below are under RA 9492 and Proclamation 1699, unless otherwise indicated. National Regular Holidays and Special Non-Working Holidays (unless indicated as a special non-working holiday, these are regular holidays) |

Employers and entrepreneurs may not view declared holidays in the same way as their workers. Extra pay for work rendered on a holiday means extra operating costs. This may be especially true in case of a long stretch of holidays, like the one we'll have in December (by way of getting your opinion, through the comment section below, are you in favor of the long holidays?). |
