It's gratifying to see so many sites similar to the Pinoy Entrepreneurs (or, rather, to which this Pinoy Entrepreneurs site is similar). This site is relatively new, if we reckon it from the heart-wrenching server crash, but regardless of who came first, the important matter is for each site to serve the purpose of promoting Filipino entrepreneurship.

 

When the little book entitled "12 Little Things Every Filipino Can Do to Help Our Country" was first printed, I got a copy through Alex Lacson’s wife, Pia. I've heard good things about Alex as a brod, but I believe Mr. Soliven’s description of Alex would be much better than mine. I can also say that Mr. Soliven’s description about Pia, who’s with a former client and my teacher at UPLaw, is true.

 

Here's a brief backgrounder from Inquirer news: "At first, the book was available only at Lacson’s Makati office and his White Plains home. He had no marketing plan then, but when word got out about the little book, orders began pouring in, sometimes by the bulk. On the book’s first run in June last year, only 2,000 copies were printed by Alay Pinoy, whose owner is Lacson’s friend. Within two months, they were sold out. Soon, the publisher was printing 10,000 copies, then 3,000, and 10,000 more copies."

1) The Nigerian scam, also known as 419

Most of you have received an email from a member of a Nigerian family with wealth. It is a desperate cry for help in getting a very large sum of money out of the country. A common variation is a woman in Africa who claimed that her husband had died, and that she wanted to leave millions of dollars of his estate to a good business.

 

I wish I were one of you today, instead of a 77-year-old man, giving a speech you will probably forget when you wake up from your hangover tomorrow. You may be surprised I feel this way. Many of you are feeling fearful and apprehensive about your future. You are thinking that, perhaps, your Ateneo diploma will not mean a whole lot in the future in a country with too many problems. And you are probably right. You are thinking that our country is slipping-no, sliding. Again, you may be right.

 

Twenty years ago, we were at par with countries like Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. Today, we are left way behind. You know the facts.
